THE ROOTS OF TERRAZZO

 It is most often reported that the birth of Terrazzo was in ancient Venice. The Venetian terrazzo floor or “battuto” is so called because it achieved its maximum development and splendor in that famous Italian city. But terrazzo's roots lie even deeper in history, all the way back to ancient Greece, where floors made from stream stones were arranged and mixed with lime or clay. But for all practical purposes, terrazzo as it is known today, indeed did descend from mid-16th century Venice. Today in fact, in Venice, Venetians still refer to the beauty of terrazzo as "like walking through the city on Marble Carpets."

 Today in 2019, terrazzo is an eco-friendly material, fusing extraordinary design potential with optimum durability and extremely low maintenance. Based on its longevity, Terrazzo is still considered the lowest cost flooring material available. Terrazzo as we know it was created when Venetian mosaic workers discovered a way to reuse marble remnants. Using the most oddly shaped chips of every size, these resourceful craftsmen began to build rudimentary terraces around their earliest "homes." 

 Environmentally-friendly and "green" from its first days, terrazzo's naturalness even extended to the first sealer for terrazzo, which was accidentally discovered when craftsmen noticed a coating of goat milk brought out the rich, vibrant colors and sheen of the marble.

 The first terrazzo in the United States was laid by Italian craftsmen in 1890 in the Vanderbilt residence on Fifth Avenue in New York.  Between 1900 and 1915, three million Italians immigrated to the United States. Terrazzo and mosaic workers, because their work was so highly skilled and valued, were regarded as the aristocracy of the immigrant labor force. That labor force includes this writer's ancestors, the Inellos, Carusos, Colaccios and Camillones and other Italians who immigrated here in the first 15 years of the 20th century. The "terazzeri," as these skilled craftsmen were called, were regarded as true artists; they guarded the secrets of their craft, handing them down across generations. These family businesses built a powerful network of firms that expanded the terrazzo trade and dominated the market across the United States. 

 Today terrazzo continues its historical significance as the most cost-effective, versatile, functional and stunningly beautiful style of flooring.
